Following a 4-3 shootout loss on Wednesday, the Northeast Generals and the Main Nordiques will wrap up their three-game stretch in short succession at the Canton Ice House.
The Generals will search for a response victory over the Nordiques tonight at 7:00 pm. Just over twelve hours after the final buzzer, the two teams will meet again at 11:30 am on Sunday.
The Gens secured a single point in a 4-3 shootout loss on Wednesday night in the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn, Maine.
Despite trailing three separate times, the Generals showed strong resilience throughout the first 60-minute meeting between the two teams this season. Facing deficits of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2, the Generals tied the game each time with goals by Owen O’Rear, Alec Hall, and Kody Moyer. However, they never led at any time.
O’Rear’s goal came shorthanded, marking the Generals’ eighth shorthanded goal of the season and the seventh the Nordiques have given up. The Gens stopped all five Nordiques’ power plays on the night and have now gone 5 consecutive games, including 26 straight kills without surrendering a power-play goal. Special teams were also successful on the flipside, with Hall’s goal coming on one of the Generals’ two power-play attempts.
Will Mizenko was heavily the busier goalie, stopping 34 of 37 shots faced as the Generals were outshot for the fifth straight game, 37-19.
The shootout was also the longest of the season, needing six shooters aside to find the game-winner. O’Rear scored as the fifth shooter, but so did Maine’s Dante Rodriguez. Former General Luke Gallo provided the winner following an unsuccessful attempt from former Nordique, Andrew Gibbons.
The Nordiques have the slight edge in the East Division standings, currently sitting in third place with 30 points through 23 games. The Generals counter in fourth with 29 points in 24 games.
The Generals are 7-5-0-0 at home this season.
