After nearly seven weeks, delighting the fans at the Canton Ice House with six consecutive home wins, the Gen’s streak was finally broken as they were on the wrong side of a 5-3 loss to the Rochester Jr Americans on Friday night.
The matchup was the third of the season between the two clubs, with the Generals victorious in both games back in October in Rochester.
A Michal Tkac point shot through a mess of net front bodies led to the Americans striking first, while outshooting the Generals 12-4 in the opening frame.
The Gens responded early in the second, scoring a power play goal courtesy of Owen O’Rear. This was the third straight game O’Rear found the back of the net while also snapping the Generals’ three-game drought without a power-play marker.
Waves of momentum continued to alternate as the game progressed into the third period. Konnor Powell regained Rochester’s lead heading into the second intermission. However, another strong start to the opening minutes of the third period led to the Gens and Alec Hall tying the game at 2. Not long after tying the game, Kody Moyer provided the Gens their first lead with his 7th goal of the season. The lead lasted a whole nine seconds, when on the ensuing shift, goaltender Will Mizenko got caught behind his net and couldn’t recover before the puck bounced out to Owen King, who converted for a 3-3 tie.
The Americans netted the game-winner seven minutes later when Colin Dustin and a swarm of players battled in front, allowing a mid-air puck past Mizenko. Michael Sandruck then sealed the 5-3 win with an empty-netter.
Despite a solid display of resiliency, the Generals did not have the best game. A bright spot, however, did come from their penalty kill, which stood tall and shut down all seven of Rochester’s power plays. The Gens’ power play went 1/3
The Gens haven’t lost back-to-back games since September 19th and 20th and will try to keep that streak alive with a rematch set tonight for 7 pm.
