About Fran Mackin

Fran Mackin brings a development first mindset to everything he does at the Northeast Hockey Academy. Originally from Philadelphia, PA, Fran grew up playing for the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers in the AJHL before continuing his career at Johnson & Wales University, where he competed at the NCAA Division III level and served as team captain his senior year.

After his playing career, Fran moved into leadership and operations roles within hockey development. He served as Hockey Director at the New England Sports Village from 2017 to 2021, then as Operations and Program Manager at Method Hockey and TPH Academy in West Chester, PA.

During this time, Fran also founded Strategic Hockey Systems, a player development platform focused on helping athletes build their skills with purpose while developing a deeper understanding of the mental side of the game and how skills translate into real game situations.

Fran’s approach is rooted in accountability, structure, and long-term growth. He believes development goes far beyond ice time and skill work. At the Academy, his focus is on building better players, stronger students, and more prepared young adults. He works closely with staff to create an environment where athletes are supported, challenged, and held to a high standard in every part of their day.

Fran leads the Academy’s Next Level Leaders program, which is designed to expose players to real world skills such as communication, leadership, teamwork, and personal responsibility. The program reflects his belief that success at the next level, both in hockey and in life, comes from who you are as much as how you play.

Player advancement is a major priority for Fran. He takes pride in actively advocating for Academy players by communicating with junior programs and helping create opportunities for athletes to be seen, evaluated, and placed in the right environment for their next step.

At his core, Fran believes that when development, accountability, and opportunity align, players are put in the best position to succeed long after their time at the Academy.

About Owen Campbell

Raised in Foxboro, Massachusetts, he developed his passion for hockey at a young age and went on to play junior hockey with the South Shore Kings. He continued his playing career at Skidmore College, competing at the NCAA Division III level. During his time at Skidmore, he appeared in 100 career games and earned Academic All-American honors, reflecting his commitment both on the ice and in the classroom.

Following graduation, he began his professional career at Edge Performance Systems, where he now serves as the Director of Strength & Conditioning. In this role, he has worked hands-on with more than 100 professional athletes across the NHL, AHL, and NFL. He has also played a key role in developing young athletes into top Division I players and NHL Draft picks.

His coaching philosophy centers on long-term development, both on and off the ice. He emphasizes attention to detail and hockey IQ, while instilling accountability, discipline, and a strong team-first mindset. Known for rewarding effort and work ethic, his ultimate goal is to prepare players for the demands of the next level by equipping them with the physical, tactical, and mental tools needed to succeed

About Shane Starrett

Shane Starrett brings a wealth of hockey experience to the Northeast Hockey Academy. Born and raised in Bellingham, MA, Shane grew up playing his youth hockey out of the Foxboro Sports Center for the South Shore Kings. Shane attended Catholic Memorial High School in Boston before transferring to a hockey academy style program with South Kent School in Connecticut. After South Kent, Shane went from the USHL, to the USPHL (now NCDC) with the South Shore Kings, before attending the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. After a two year college hockey career, Shane became the all-time Air Force Academy leader in save percentage and goals against average, collecting 2 all-conference team selections, conference goalie of the year in 2016, playoff MVP in 2017, an NCAA tournament appearance in 2017, and helping Air Force Academy become a top 10 ranked team in the nation.

After the Air Force Academy, Shane became the first Air Force Academy player to sign an NHL contract when he signed with the Edmonton Oilers in 2017. He became an ECHL All-Star in 2018, and an AHL All-Star in 2019. From there, Shane played for the Penguins organization, Kraken organization, and Bruins organization, as well as a year in Europe before retiring from professional hockey. Throughout his career, Shane had been coached by many NHL coaches such as Todd McLellan, Jay Woodcroft, Jim Montgomery, and Dan Bylsma.

Shane also come from a hockey family. Shane's 3 brothers all played college hockey, with his younger brother being an NHL draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks and a former professional as well. Shane's brothers attended Harvard, Babson, and Cornell, adding to the depth of hockey knowledge he grew up around.

Shane eventually retired and became a goaltending coach in 2024 with GDS before using his hockey experience to become a head coach for the Northeast Hockey Academy. Taking in all he has learned from his playing career, Shane tries to apply the lessons and knowledge necessary for his players to succeed at the next level. Not only playing from the best, but learning from Stanley Cup winning coaches allows Shane to pass along the details seen for the next levels ahead.

Shane's ultimate goal is to develop players on the ice, as well as off. Shane knows from experience what it takes to not only become a college hockey player, but a professional hockey player. He wants to teach his players the structure, skill, discipline, and drive it takes to make it to the next level, and hopefully beyond.

About Michael Luppino

Michael Luppino is a retired Massachusetts public school teacher. Michael is an Academic Success Coach for the Northeast Hockey Academy. Michael works in the academy’s classroom to assist and guide the student-athletes to help them succeed academically and athletically. One of the things Michael does in the classroom is to help organize the academy’s Champions program. This program allows student-athletes an opportunity for a flexible training environment that enables them to improve their overall abilities and performance.

With years of coaching experience, Michael was a part of four baseball championships, coached softball for several years, and guided students to three consecutive first-place finishes in Massachusetts in an IXL academic contest. Michael’s approach emphasizes discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and personal growth to help student-athletes thrive both in school and in sports.
